About Irene

Irene is a registered nurse of 14 years and wellness coach specializing in Therapeutic Cardiac Yoga and Stress Management. Her interest in health and love of sharing yoga has led her, with her husband Ron, to build the Blue Ridge Aikido & Yoga Center in Troutville, Virginia.  Irene is certified by Lighten Up Yoga Teacher Training Institute, an intensive course of study based on the Iyengar Method, registered with the National Yoga Alliance.  She is further certified through the completion of a 500 hour program in the art and science of yoga with Anna Pitman in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Irene's strong desire to bring the healing art of yoga into the medical setting led her to complete an Advanced Teacher Training in Cardiac Yoga® with Dr. Mala Cunningham.  Her work with people living with the challenges of heart disease brought her back to the Integral Yoga Institute for  Stress Management Training.  The Integral Yoga® system of Hatha Yoga is utilized by the Commonweal Cancer Help program and by Dr. Dean Ornish in his book Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease. Irene offers programs to individuals, groups, and in the workplace.

Philosophy
The study and practice of yoga begins with awareness.
You begin where you are, with practice, over time you establish a solid foundation deeply rooted in a sense of inner peace that supports your health and happiness.

Irene's personal practice of yoga began over 25 years ago, and has developed into the gift that she shares with others in hospital and corporate settings, as well as at the serene studio she and Ron share located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  Irene creates an environment where each class is an opportunity for self-discovery.  She provides a foundation for you to cultivate awareness and develop the skills to establish a personal practice.  Irene empowers you to discover the benefits of yoga for yourself and to use the path of yoga to support your health and well-being.

Irene is grateful for all the support she has received over the years.  She is passionately devoted to teaching the art and science of yoga in a safe and loving environment so others can take charge of their own practice and their health through the seasons of life.  A typical evening class at the studio might include a new mother, a retired school principal, an art professor, lawyer, and two forty-something best friends ... all safely taught within their own physical boundaries in an age-old practice that encourages caring for one's self in a world that often takes everything we have to give.

Like the practice of yoga, working with a wellness coach also begins with awareness.  Through coaching one is encouraged to identify, develop, and continue on the pathway toward self-improvement, balance and achievement in all aspects of one's life.

Whether one is in a business suit or sweat suit, Irene offers pause for contemplation, and a place where we learn the value of self-care and healing, over and over again.
